GUARANI RECEIVES CERTIFICATES OF ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT - 25/10/2007

In the evening of October 22, a certificate of commitment to Agro-Environmental Protocol was granted by São Paulo Government to Guarani factories: Cruz Alta, Severínia, São José, Tanabi, Andrade and Cardoso. In practice, Guarani has committed to bringing forward the legal deadlines to stop the burning of sugarcane straw, which has been previously forecasted to 2021.

By this commitment, Guarani means to eliminate the burning of sugarcane straw by 2014 in mechanized areas. For non-mechanized areas, Guarani promised to eliminate the burning practice by 2017. Concerning new plantation areas, burnings should not take place.

The Agro-Environmental Protocol was signed by José Serra, São Paulo State Governor, João Sampaio, Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Francisco Graziano, Environmental Secretary and Eduardo Pereira de Carvalho, former Chairman of UNICA - Sugarcane Industry Union.
